Project Management

Overview

Project Management, at the highest level, is the art of controlling time, cost and quality to achieve succesful delivery. For a project following a "waterfal" process, the detail behind these activities can be daunting enough. For projects following an iterative process, the detail can often seem overwhelming.

Of all the disciplines impacted by adopting an iterative process, Project Mangement is the most affected and often the hardest for personnel to master. There are many reasons for this, but amongst those most often seen is project managers reluctance to allow work to proceed until detailed plans exist for the whole project, and iterations not tackling the greatest risks first.

When mastered iterative project planning allows the project manager to address detail when it needs to be. Through the practice of testing a software build in each iteration, verifiable progress can be measured in a way that is not possible with the waterfall apporach.

The RUP® Project Management discipline focuses on the internal aspects of software development projects. For a complete project management approach, addressing project start-up and project board reporting, integration into a more general purpose project management process is needed, either informally or formally. For those organisations using PRINCE2®, Improvix provides a process plug-in to RUP that integrates PRINCE2 project management with the RUP project management discipline.
