Business Modelling
It is possible to use the same approach as is used to model system requiremts to modelling business processes. Doing so allows an organisaiton to build on skills already available from systems development teams, but also ensures that the end result is understandable by them.
This can be useful to provide context or domain information to inform system development, but can also be used to make business process improvements that are then realised by enhanced or new systems.
Business Modelling using UML models business processes as Business Use Cases. Activity Diagrams are used to describe process flows in detail. Business Objects are used to model business information. This is a rigorous approach to modelling an organisations interactions with its external "users" - modelled as Business Actors - such as customers, financial, government and regulatory organisations.
Once a business model is available, there are well defined processes for deriving system requirements where automation of business process is desired.
