Improvix P2 Plug-in for RUP
The PRINCE2® Plug-in for IBM Rational Method Composer (RMC) has been developed for users of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) who wish to use the PRINCE2 Project Management method in place of RUP Project Management.
A simple integration of PRINCE2 with RUP, whereby PRINCE2 simply replaces RUP Project Management, is not possible for 2 major reasons:-
- RUP Project Planning techniques applicable to iterative development must be adopted if RUP is to succeed
- Project Management activities must be closely integrated with RUP processes to be effective
Attempts to operate PRINCE2 alongside RUP Project Management are cumbersome, require significant management effort and are likely to fail.
PRINCE2 demands interaction with Programme Management (or equivalent) which is not supported by RUP.
By providing fully-integrated PRINCE2/RUP in the standard RUP format, the organisation can adopt RUP within a framework of familiar management controls and with reduced organisational change. Furthermore, the delivery of the PRINCE2 method in this format is likely to be a considerable advance in environments where PRINCE2 is not automated.
PRINCE2 began life in 1975 as PROMPTII and was adopted by CCTA, a U.K. government agency, in 1979. PRINCE was developed from PROMPTII in 1989 and then evolved to become PRINCE2 in 1996. It is the standard Project Management method for all U.K. government projects and is used widely in the private sector and internationally.

PRINCE2 contains processes for both Project Management and Configuration and Change Management. In addition, certain interactions between Project Management and Programme Management (or equivalent) which are not present in RUP are included in PRINCE2.
In outline, the objective is to:-
- Incorporate PRINCE2 processes which do not exist in RUP
- Replace RUP processes with PRINCE2 processes where appropriate
- Replace PRINCE2 processes with RUP processes where appropriate
- Merge PRINCE2 and RUP processes where necessary
The result should be a seamless integration of PRINCE2 and RUP wherein the principle of using best practice is consistently applied. In particular, PRINCE2 project management should be presented with an environment which is familiar to them, although certain differences are inevitable, whilst RUP Software Development disciplines remain unchanged.

The PRINCE2 process, Manage Product Delivery will be largely replaced with the RUP process, Manage Iteration, although some PRINCE2 content must be retained to support other PRINCE2 processes. The PRINCE2 process Initiate a Project will be extended to incorporate certain RUP Inception phase activities. PRINCE2 Planning techniques will be extensively adapted to incorporate RUP Iteration Planning.

PRINCE2?s Startup stage is pre-pended to RUP to reflect it?s pre-project nature. The Initiation stage is integrated with Inception as they have common goals. Project Closure activities are integrated with Transition.

The user interface is presented as for standard RUP, published using RMC.
